Wicked Witch by ArtNerdEm Wicked Witch by ArtNerdEm
I did my Wicked book cover 2 years ago, and I thought it deserved a touch up. I did some digital re-inking and a lot of new coloring, and I'm happier with it now. I think I'm starting to learn my way around coloring in photoshop, at least....

I also tried to make her a little more emotional in in this one, but some people seem to not like it because she's "meaner" now. Oh well. Maybe someday I'll get this one right.... :)

(The old version: [link] )

Also, since I drew this I've actually seen the play. So freaking good!

I love this waaaay too much...

I like the "meaner" look- it's just the right amount of fierceness, I think.
The style of this is wonderful. I'm really enjoying your pictures- I expect an indecent amount of favorite-ing. :)

I am confused... people complain that a wicked witch looks mean? What? Does the play portray her as the good guy or something?

Back in my day, wicked = mean.

Have to say that both the old and the new are amazing! Great job!

I love Elphie and I love your art! She is mean tho! You know, in a good way. In an intelligent what the hell is wrong with this world way. I think it's fantastic!

I love this musical. It's a great show and you artwork is amazing. I love the lettering and I like the expression in her face it gives her more character. :)
dark-angel-13 Featured By Owner Feb 20, 2011
If you don't mind me saying, I think I prefer the first face. I'm not too sure why, because they're both equally brilliant. You've done two great jobs.

Another thing I'd like to comment on if it's all right for me to do so is the background. I love the new highlighted greens on Elphie's dress, but I think if the background was possibly a bit darker and if you darkened the shadows more to give a wider overall contrast...

I'm not sure what I'm going for here. I couldn't do anywhere near anything like this, and I really hope you don't take this in the wrong way at all because this (and the previous version, which is the one I found first) is such a wonderfully amazing piece, but I thought that maybe my comments might be helpful. :)

Again, wonderful work. :)

The musical doesn't do the book justice~ :p
I sincerely hope they don't make a movie. They'd probably screw it up, and then I'd want to punch someone >>;

I like that the new lighting makes her eyes look more fierce--it captures her mood throughout the book, and the mood of the book itself.
NeonAnimePrincess Featured By Owner Jul 12, 2010  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
Her face is a little meaner than the other one, but she's just as pretty. Well done, it suits her really well. Poor elphaba!

I would like to add on to my previous comment:
If you think she looks mad, angry, furious, about to explode with rage, or anything ELSE along those lines,I'd just like to point something out that you may or may not have already thought of. If you have, great, you don't have to read this, but if not, you're about to learn something important, so pay attention! Stop for just a minute, and take the time to ask yourself: "How would I feel if it was ME in her position?" I mean, honestly, you guys, think about it!!! She was scorned ever since the day she was born! Her own father couldn't stand to even look at her, let alone love her, and after her mother died, Nessarose was always more "important" than her, always the priority, the princess, getting the royal treatment. And then, in college at Shiz, everyone made fun of her and thought she was a freak and that kind of crap, Glinda and Fiyero were LITERALLY her ONLY friends in her ENTIRE LIFE, and once she was an adult, her sister--in the book, not the play--SWORE to her that if she ever died a premature death--which she DID--ELPHABA would be the one to inherit the Ruby Slippers, and even though Glinda was well aware of this fact, she GAVE THEM AWAY to a complete and total STRANGER without asking Elphie's permission first! And also in the book, Fiyero--the man she LOVED--was MURDERED, and where did that leave HER?! And then, in the end of it all, that stupid little FARM GIRL IN A FUCKING BLUE DRESS MURDERS her in the book and in the play, she is FORCED to play a trick on her BEST FRIEND--who, by the way, was WAY more of a sister to her than her REAL sister had ever been--to make her think she was DEAD and then she had to LEAVE OZ never to return OR see her best friend ever again for the rest of her LIFE!!!! I dunno about the rest of you, but if I was Elphaba, I'D be pretty pissed off, TOO!!!!!!!!!......Just......please.....take some time to think about what I've said.....and then ask yourself: "How would I feel if I was Elphaba?"......Becauseyou know what? If you take a while to really think about it, you'll probably find that the answer is simple: "I'd feel how Elphaba felt."

Never having seen the musical (even though I really want to) I have to agree with you :} I think I've tried explaining that to people multiple times, but you put it pretty well, and just a thought, but I'm pretty sure she wasn't completely sane by the end of the book because of . . . well her life
psychic-pixie17 Featured By Owner Feb 10, 2013
Sane or not, that doesn't change anything.
BassSlappingMongrel Featured By Owner Apr 22, 2010
I wish I could fav your comment.

I just finished reading Wicked for the first time yesterday (has to be my second all time favourite book, ever), and I have to agree with this comment completely.

I could go on about why, but it'll take up alot of pages.

So, I'll just say: "here, here" to your comment.
psychic-pixie17 Featured By Owner May 27, 2010
I just wish that everybody could be as sweet, kind, and understanding to her as Fiyero, Glinda, and you are. It would mean so much to me. What happened to the poor girl just absoloutly shatters my heart into a million pieces. Nothing and nobody in the entire universe will ever be able to repair my heart. Ever. *cries*
psychic-pixie17 Featured By Owner Mar 6, 2010
To all of you who claim she looks "mean" in this: If Elphaba was "mean," as you say she is, then please explain to the rest of us how, exactly, she was able to earn herself not only a best friend, but a lover, as well. Please, take the time to enlighten us, because I, for one, think she is not only beautiful and gorgeous in her own special way as well as incredible as a just plain person, but she is most certainly, and I am saying this without a single god damn doubt in my mind, a kind, sweet, loving, caring, and lovable person who is no way, shape, or form, "mean."
I really like this take on the picture. It's funny how even though her expression is really different from the original version both "work" for Elphaba as a character. Meh, I'm so obsessed by this musical right now XD

qwazar Featured By Owner Aug 25, 2009  Hobbyist Photographer
you know elphie was .... contradictory... so each "complicated" emotion on her face wold be looking good. This one is a bit too angry for me ... and a bit too obviousalthough who knows wha elphie has in mind.
ArtNerdEm Featured By Owner Aug 26, 2009  Professional Digital Artist
Ah, true. It's hard for me to draw good expressive emotions sometimes, so when I do they're not usually subtle :D
qwazar Featured By Owner Aug 29, 2009  Hobbyist Photographer
try to make a strong expression or neutral and you will get subtle - god knows why but it aalways works this way :)
qwazar Featured By Owner Aug 18, 2009  Hobbyist Photographer
although i really prefer the finish-off on this one i prefereed somehow the mimic on the other one - more gentle... although this one very decided is amazing also
ArtNerdEm Featured By Owner Aug 22, 2009  Professional Digital Artist
I tried to give her face a little more emotion in this one since she was a passionate character... a lot of people seem to not like it though. Oh well, maybe I'll try another Wicked piece some day :)
